Deach
Just over twenty years ago Deach (Fred Fa’afou) was making his rapping debut as part of his school’s talent quest. A veteran MC, singer, DJ and performer, Deach is now one of Aotearoa’s most well-known urban artists and has entertained crowds across New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific for the past decade.
Deach has built a solo career with his ‘Poly-Reggae’ style, a unique fusion of Hip-Hop, R&B and Reggae, which has a distinctive Polynesian flavour. This style has spawned hits such as ‘Be With You’ featuring Pieter T, which has over 3.5 million views on YouTube and 4 million streams, along with ‘Slow It Down’ and more recently ‘No Letting Go’.
Recent tours throughout NZ and Australia with Pleasure P(from Pretty Ricky) and as part of the Future Nesian Festival have reinvigorated this much loved Smashproof member, and 2020 is set to be a big year for Deach creatively after writing sessions in Australia with Willie Tafa (Ariana Grande, DJ Mustard, Ella Mai, Clinton Sparks) and back in New Zealand at Woodcut Studios.
Of Samoan decent, Deach is also one third of Hip-Hop trio Smashproof whose 2009 song ‘Brother’ broke chart records and elevated the group to mainstream success in New Zealand. The song became New Zealand’s longest running #1 single, with 11 weeks at the top of the NZ Top 40 Chart, taking the title from the 1986 America's Cup track ‘Sailing Away’. Smashproof’s debut album THE WEEKEND was released the same year, peaking at #3 on the New Zealand Top 40 Albums chart, with three consecutive top twenty singles. Smashproof went on to win three New Zealand Music Awards in 2009; ‘People’s Choice’, ‘Highest Selling Single’ and ‘Best Video’. The trio (TY, Young Sid, Deach) have gone on to become one of the most reputable and recognised Hip-Hop groups the nation has produced.
Outside of music, Deach runs a successful fitness business Discipline Performance Gym, with locations in Central and South Auckland.
